The New Deanery wins at the Prosper Essex Care sector awards

Staff at our Braintree care home have won more recognition for their quality service – scooping two highly commended awards and an overall winner at the Prosper Essex Care Sector Awards.

Terri Pike, Home Manager at St Mary’s Court, was highly commended in the Care Leader award and Mark Wadforth, Head of Maintenance, was highly commended in the Unsung Hero category.

But the icing on the cake was recognition for Paul Westall, long-serving Chef at The New Deanery, who won the Nutrition and Hydration Award.

The awards celebrate good practice and innovation in care, and the excellence and dedication of individuals. The judges recognised Paul’s proactive and innovative approach to nutrition and hydration, which is tailored to the individual needs of residents.

Paul, who has worked at our care home for nearly ten years, said his dedicated catering team has, on occasions, prepared as many as 17 different choices on the lunch menu for the 150 residents.

“It’s great to be recognised for all the hard work we do.

It’s a lovely environment and we enjoy keeping the residents’ happy. I run a residents’ forum once a month to find out what they like and what they want to see on the menu, and I also attend residents’ families’ meetings at St Mary’s Court.

We discuss the individual needs of residents who may, for example, have problems chewing or swallowing.”

‘Prosper’ is a collaboration between care homes, Essex County Council, the health sector, UCLPartners and Anglia Ruskin Health Partnership, which is aiming to improve safety and reduce deterioration in the health and quality of life of vulnerable care home residents.

The annual awards were presented at celebratory event attended by care staff, managers and residents from across Essex, held at Chelmsford Racecourse on 28 November.

They concluded a successful month for The New Deanery and St Mary’s Court, which also scooped three awards at The Great British Care Awards, East of England. Sonnet Care Homes, which runs the two homes, was judged Care Employer of the Year, Joan Sirett won the Dignity in Care Award, and Patricia Natel Barroso of St Mary’s Court received the Good Nurse Award and now go forward to the national finals.

Sonnet Care Homes CEO, Julia Clinton, said:

“I’m proud that our staff have been recognised for their daily hard work and dedication to ensuring our residents are at the heart of everything we do. It is a team effort, and confirms the quality of care provided by whole Sonnet team.”

Both The New Deanery and St Mary’s Court have been rated by the Care Quality Commission as ‘outstanding’ for leadership and ‘good’ in all other aspects covering care, safety, effectiveness and responsiveness.
