The New Deanery care home has scooped three more awards, being judged Care Employer of the Year for the second year running.

The homes in Braintree won the accolades at The Great British Care Awards, East of England, and now go forward to the national finals in Birmingham next year.

Joan Sirett won the Dignity in Care Award, and Patricia Natel Barroso of St Mary’s Court received the Good Nurse Award.

The awards promote best practice across the care sector and pay tribute to those individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their field of work.

Sonnet Care Homes, which runs the two homes, was described by the judges as an inspirational and committed, well-led organisation, which embeds kindness, comfort and respect into its culture.
Julia Clinton, Sonnet Care Homes CEO, said: “We are delighted to be recognised by The Great British Care Awards, we feel it is a real testament to the dedication and commitment of the whole Sonnet team.”

Joan Sirett, Matron, was highlighted by the judges as a passionate and dedicated care professional with a clear structure in place to ensure dignity was embedded into the organisation’s culture. Joan said: “I’m honoured to receive this award, the whole team is dedicated to putting our residents at the heart of everything we do, and this is recognition for their kindness and hard work.”

Patricia Natel Barroso, Senior Registered Nurse, was praised for showing great passion for nursing and for the vulnerable people she cares for. The judges said she leads by example and is a well-regarded mentor for other staff. Patricia said: “I love my job and working with our residents and their families to give them reassurance and a welcoming home, while looking after their health to provide the best possible quality of life.”

The awards ceremony in Peterborough was attended by 300 care professionals, with strong competition for the awards. Sonnet staff were also shortlisted for Care Home Manager (Jane Sadowski); Care Home Cook/Chef (Paul Westall); Ancillary Worker (Mark Wadforth); Care Trainer (Mandi Randall-Cramp) and Frontline Leader (Juliet Felton).

Sonnet Care homes have also been shortlisted for three accolades at the National Care Awards, with winners to be announced on 24 November.

Home Manager at The New Deanery, Jane Sadowski, is in the running in the Care Home Manager category; Head of Activities, Jo Whitehouse, has been shortlisted for Care Activities Co-ordinator; and the care team at The New Deanery is shortlisted in the Care Team category.

Both The New Deanery and St Mary’s Court have been rated by the Care Quality Commission as ‘outstanding’ for leadership and ‘good’ in all other aspects covering care, safety, effectiveness and responsiveness.
