The New Deanery Care Home, Braintree, Essex
Residents of The New Deanery and St Mary’s Court care homes and their families travelled back in time to enjoy a spectacular final outdoor event of the summer.
Sonnet Care Homes invited the Medieval Combat Society, which recreates life in the 14th Century, to teach participants medieval dancing and archery, and perform a medieval battle.
The event in September attracted an audience of around 200, with relatives and visitors wearing medieval hats that residents had been busy making. Staff also dressed up for the occasion and thoroughly embraced the medieval spirit.
The weather held out for most of the afternoon, allowing everyone to enjoy a hog roast and watch an impressive falconry display.
The Medieval Day, in the spacious grounds of the New Deanery and St Mary’s Court residential care homes, also raised £335 for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Jo Whitehouse, Activities Manager, said: “We have never held a medieval event before but I wanted something special for our grand finale of the year. I am so pleased with how it went, there was so much for everyone to do including the chance to chat to members of the medieval society who were more than happy to explain all their roles.
“It is always great to see so many relatives and families enjoying themselves, so a huge thank you to everyone who made this final summer event so special.”
